
On 12 January, the IAS Livestreaming titled “Tea Talk for 2025 UM Open Day,” organized by the Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) of the University of Macau (UM), was successfully held in the Common Room at the IAS in the Cultural Building. This event featured Prof. Xingzhong YU, Director of IAS and Chair Professor of FLL; Prof. Di WANG, Associate Director of IAS and Chair Professor of FAH; and Prof. Shaoyang LIN, Head of Academic Programme and Publication of IAS and Distinguished Professor of FAH, as the Discussants. The event was moderated by Dr. Qiqi HUANG, Post-doctoral Fellow of IAS.
At the beginning of the event, Dr. HUANG introduced the theme of the 2025 UM Open Day, “Connecting Macao and Hengqin,” and highlighted the remarkable achievements of the UM since its relocation to the Hengqin campus in 2014, as well as its proactive efforts in positioning itself with the development goal of “A university with firm roots in Macao, while at the same time being committed to participating in the development of the Greater Bay Area. UM hopes to integrate itself into national development while reaching out to the world.” Then, Professor YU, Professor WANG, and Professor LIN separately provided detailed introductions to the IAS’s mission, academic activities, and the academic journal, South China Quarterly: Journal of University of Macau. Subsequently, the livestream connected remotely with Professor SHUI, Associate Director of IAS and Professor of FLL, who is currently a visiting scholar at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge. The atmosphere was lively.
During the Q&A session, both online and on-site audiences actively participated by asking questions, while the professors provided thought-provoking and engaging responses. The professors’ answers were thought-provoking and engaging. The topics spanned various fields, including legal philosophy, history, and sociology, ranging from research methods in the humanities and social sciences to the construction of public spaces in the post-pandemic era. The professors provided profound guidance and shared valuable experiences, demonstrating the depth and inclusivity of academic exchange.
Since its establishment in 2019, IAS has marked five fruitful years. Looking ahead, IAS will continue to organize high-quality academic activities that promote diversity, collaboration, and innovation in research.
