The Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) and the Faculty of Law (FLL) of the University of Macau, in collaboration with the Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law at the University of Vienna (Austria) and the Österreichische Forschungsgemeinschaft (ÖFG, Austria), successfully held the international workshop: “Regulation of Artificial Intelligence: EU-China Dialogues” at UM E1 on February 21-22, 2024.

The workshop invited more than 20 experts and scholars in the field of law and AI technology from UM and abroad. Through an interdisciplinary lens, it focused discussions on the pros and cons of the application of AI technology and the current and potential future regulations in the EU, China, and other regions on its usage. Over the two days, the conference attracted numerous participants, including academics and students from renowned domestic and international institutions who engaged in insightful exchanges of views and perspectives, stimulating meaningful academic discourse and fruitfully promoting interdisciplinary collaboration.

During the opening ceremony, Professor Yu Xingzhong, Director of IAS, discussed current international trends and issues regarding AI laws and policies, he strengthened his points of the essentiality of forming consensus and proper regulations, and he also gave his view on the future development of AI application.

The conference featured two keynote speeches and five panel discussions, inviting professors and experts from prominent higher education institutions and international organizations around the world, including the University of Vienna, Harvard University, University of Bremen, Zhejiang University, University of International Business and Economics ( UIBE), Sigmund Freud Private University, East China University of Political Science and Law, University of Klagenfurt, and the United Nations University Institute in Macau. Through aggregating perspectives from both internal and external scholars, the conference not only introduced views from various academic fields and regions to a broad audience of students and academia but also provide a platform for UM faculty members and IAS research fellows to engage in profound exchanges with leading scholars to widen their international horizons.

Adopting “The Regulation of Artificial Intelligence: EU – China Dialogues” as its focal point, the conference discussed topics spanning AI governance, AI regulations, AI and intellectual property, and AI applications in various fields. This workshop aims to explore how AI applications have integrated into the field of academic and even our daily life, the opportunities and challenges brought by AI, and what international consensus and regulations should we apply to build a better future for humanity and science/technology to thrive together.

The international workshop was a significant event organized by IAS in collaboration with FLL and other international organizations, providing a platform for scholarly exchanges and dialogues, as well as probing emerging research frontiers and broadening international perspectives. In the future, IAS will keep up with the latest research trends and organize more quality academic activities.
