Professor Di Wang, Associate Director of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS), has recently been honoured as the “2024 Influential Scholar of the Year” by China Newsweek. This year marks the 25th anniversary of China Newsweek, and the award aims to recognize outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions and a profound impact in the fields of academia, culture, and technology.

In 2024, Professor Wang published two major works, The Lost Ancient City (Revised Edition) and Entering the Inside of the Chinese City (Revised Edition), which reflect his profound exploration of historical research. His work focuses not only on grand historical narratives but also on the microcosms of everyday life. Through studies of teahouses, brotherhood (Paoge), and mahjong culture, he reveals the voices of ordinary people often overlooked in historical discourse. His research transcends the boundaries of traditional academic settings, using vivid and detailed narratives to bring the submerged stories of history to life.

This prestigious award not only highlights Professor Wang’s remarkable academic achievements but also testifies to the profound impact of his historical research on society.
